About This Instrument
Selmer Mark VI Low A Baritone Saxophone
This beautiful French-made Selmer Mark VI low A baritone saxophone is an excellent example of one of the most iconic and sought-after professional saxophones ever produced. Known for their enormous tonal presence, exceptional craftsmanship, and distinctive playing characteristics, Mark VI baritones have remained highly regarded among professional saxophonists for generations.
The Selmer Mark VI was introduced in 1954 and remained in production until the mid-1970s. During its remarkable production run, the Mark VI earned an extraordinary reputation among professional musicians for its innovative design, comfortable ergonomics, and expressive tonal capabilities. The low A baritone expanded the instrument's range while retaining the rich tonal character and projection that made Selmer baritones so desirable. Today, these instruments continue to be sought after by musicians who appreciate their commanding sound, expressive flexibility, and traditional French craftsmanship.
This particular example, serial number 210XXX, has an interesting history and several characteristics that make it worth a closer look. At some point during its life, the instrument underwent a refinishing process in which the original lacquer was chemically stripped, the surface was carefully evened out using steel wool, and a new lacquer finish was applied.
Unlike traditional relacquering methods that involve extensive mechanical buffing, this approach minimizes the removal of material and helps preserve the underlying brass and original details of the instrument. This is a method of refinishing that I greatly prefer, as aggressive buffing can remove material, soften engraving, and alter the fine details of a vintage saxophone. The quality of the work on this particular instrument is evident in its beautifully preserved engraving, which remains crisp, clear, and well-defined throughout the horn. The refinishing process has maintained the instrument's original character without the softened details often associated with heavily buffed relacquers.
Another important aspect of this saxophone's history is its replacement Selmer Super Action 80 neck. While the original Mark VI neck is no longer present, the replacement is a genuine Selmer neck that works exceptionally well with this instrument. In my experience playing this horn, I do not believe the replacement has negatively affected its performance. It retains the tremendous tonal presence, projection, and character that musicians expect from a great Mark VI baritone.
The saxophone previously received a complete professional overhaul at another repair shop, featuring Pro Pads with plastic resonators. After acquiring the instrument, I personally went through the horn at NJ Instrument Repair, inspecting its mechanical condition and making the necessary adjustments to bring the setup in line with my specifications. This additional attention ensures that the instrument is properly regulated, seals well, and performs consistently throughout its range.
Playing Characteristics: This is a powerful, commanding Mark VI baritone with the enormous, barking sound that has made these instruments legendary. The horn has tremendous tonal presence and projection, producing a rich, full-bodied sound with the ability to develop an aggressive edge when pushed. It retains the unmistakable character of a vintage Selmer baritone, with plenty of depth and the flexibility to respond to a wide range of musical demands.
Despite its refinishing history and replacement neck, this instrument delivers the playing experience you would hope to find in a Mark VI low A baritone. The sound is big, colorful, and authoritative, with the kind of presence that makes these horns so much fun to play. The Super Action 80 neck complements the instrument exceptionally well, allowing it to retain the powerful response and distinctive tonal character associated with the model.
For additional peace of mind, this saxophone includes a two-year parts and workmanship warranty from NJ Instrument Repair. With its previous professional overhaul and the additional inspection, regulation, and setup work completed in our shop, the instrument is ready for years of dependable performance.
