About This Instrument

Martin Handcraft Low Pitch Soprano Saxophone – 1928–1929

This beautiful American-made Martin Handcraft soprano saxophone is a wonderful example of the craftsmanship and quality that helped establish the Martin Band Instrument Company as one of America's most respected saxophone manufacturers. Dating to approximately 1928–1929, this instrument is approaching 100 years old and represents an important period in American saxophone manufacturing.

The Martin Handcraft series was introduced in the early 20th century and became known for its distinctive construction, rich tonal character, and quality craftsmanship. Manufactured in Elkhart, Indiana, these instruments were built during an era when American saxophone makers were developing some of their most recognizable designs. Martin saxophones are particularly appreciated for their resonant sound and characteristic tonal warmth, qualities that continue to attract musicians and collectors today.

This particular example is a Low Pitch model, meaning it was manufactured to the lower tuning standard that eventually became the modern A=440 Hz standard. Unlike high-pitch instruments from the same era, a properly adjusted Low Pitch saxophone is suited to playing alongside modern instruments.

The instrument has received a professional playing-condition service at NJ Instrument Repair, including inspection and the necessary adjustments to ensure reliable performance. The existing pads remain in good condition with plenty of useful life remaining, making a complete overhaul unnecessary at this time.

With its vintage American craftsmanship, nearly century-long history, and recent professional servicing, this Martin Handcraft offers a wonderful opportunity to own and play a piece of saxophone history.

The instrument includes a Protec case for convenient storage and protection.
